A request was made to the Ministry of Local Government and Disaster Risk on January 24th for the purchase of a new car for Chandra Dev Bundhoo, the chairman of the Flacq district council.
“I wish to inform you that Council at its sitting of January 31, 2024 has reiterated its decision to request the Ministry to approve the purchase of a new car for official use of the Chairperson since the expenses incurred for the actual car during the past years were exorbitant, amounting to Rs 686 835,” wrote Mrs. Tarolah, the Deputy Chief Executive of the Flacq district council, to the Senior Chief Executive of the Ministry of Local Government.
She added, “The actual car for the Chairperson’s official use has been used for the past four years. The car is in a deplorable state and the council will have to invest approximately Rs 250 000 for further maintenance works like painting, upholstery, and shock absorber. The Council is also making a request to acquire a car on loan from the police car pool. Council would be grateful if the above requests could be considered favorably.”
However, to date, no response has been received from the ministry, explained a councilor. According to information obtained, Prembhodass Ellayah, chairman of the Rivière-du-Rempart district council, had also requested an official vehicle. His request was approved and he reportedly received a new car last week. “Why this policy of double standards?” the councilor wonders. “The chairmen of the two districts are called upon to assume the same functions. Why don’t they have the same consideration?”
