A high alert for heavy rain and a strong wind warning were issued for Rodrigues at 4:30 am on Wednesday, February 21. These alerts are valid until Thursday, February 22 at 10am.

At 4:00 am this morning, moderate tropical storm Eleanor was centered around point 15.0 degrees South in latitude and 60.5 degrees East in longitude, approximately 625 km north northwest of Rodrigues. It is moving southeast at a speed of about 10 km/h.

Active cloud bands associated with moderate tropical storm Eleanor will cross the island from this evening. Therefore, moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected on the island.

The wind will blow from the east at 30 to 40 km/h and will strengthen during thunderstorms, with gusts of up to 90 km/h in exposed areas tonight. As a result, a strong wind warning and a heavy rain alert are in effect for Rodrigues.

It is advised for the public to:
i) secure items sensitive to the effects of the wind that could cause injury;
ii) be mindful of flying debris, detached branches, or uprooted trees;
iii) avoid maneuvering on the roofs of buildings and other high structures;
iv) be very cautious on the roads due to crosswinds;
v) Visibility will be reduced during showers and especially due to pockets of fog. Road users are urged to be very careful;
vi) In case of thunderstorms, the public is advised to seek shelter and avoid plains, sea outings, and not take shelter under trees;
vii) Thunderstorms may cause temporary water accumulations and flood the ford crossings. It is advised for the public not to venture into these risky areas.

These precautions are to ensure the safety of the public during the upcoming weather conditions.
