The moderate tropical storm Eleanor is currently evolving in a favorable environment with a pressure of about 990 hectopascal around the center and gusts near the center reaching about 110 km/h.
At 4am this morning on Wednesday, February 21, Eleanor was centered about 630 km almost north-northeast of Mauritius, around 15.0 degrees south latitude and 60.5 degrees east longitude. It is moving in a general southeast direction at a speed of about 10 km/h.
Numerical model data maintains that the moderate tropical storm Eleanor could curve towards the south and then towards the south-southwest at an accelerated speed, while it continues to intensify. On this new trajectory, the moderate tropical storm is approaching our region and represents a potential danger for Mauritius.
It is advisable for the public in Mauritius to take preliminary precautions.
The weather will be partly cloudy during the day. Clouds associated with the moderate tropical storm Eleanor will start to cross the island late this afternoon with occasional showers, especially in the east, south, and in the highlands. As the moderate tropical storm Eleanor approaches our region, a deterioration in the weather is expected tonight with moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms.
The wind will blow from the east-southeast at a speed of about 25 km/h with gusts reaching 60 km/h, gradually strengthening from this afternoon.
The sea will gradually become very rough with swells beyond the reefs. Sea outings are not recommended.
A Class II cyclone warning is in effect in Mauritius.
