– Health officials have recognized 4 deaths in Mauritius to date and are distributing mosquito repellent creams and informative pamphlets.

The latest figures released by the Ministry of Health indicate that Mauritius currently has 329 active cases of Dengue fever out of 3,141 cases recorded since December 11. In Rodrigues, 151 active cases have been identified out of the 1,275 cases documented so far. The deaths of four patients in Mauritius have been officially acknowledged by the ministry. However, according to Health officials, Rodrigues has not reported any deaths due to Dengue fever.

The ministry is working to reassure the population that “all preventive measures have been taken in the most at-risk areas, such as increased surveillance in health centers, antigen and PCR tests being conducted on patients, and monitoring at the virology laboratory.” Nevertheless, a map of the country, compiled by the same Health services, clearly shows that Dengue fever has spread to virtually all regions and localities in recent weeks.

Alongside the massive public awareness campaign launched by the government in response to the rapidly increasing cases, an operation to distribute mosquito repellent creams and pamphlets to the public, individuals, and businesses in various localities has commenced. Indeed, last weekend, around 50,000 doses of repellent cream were distributed in sensitive areas, particularly in Triolet and other neighboring areas. Port Louis and its suburbs, as well as several villages in the North, are among the most affected regions since the identification of the first cases on December 11.

Dr. Sudhir Kowlessur, the director of the Health Promotion and Research Unit of the Ministry of Health, explains that “the distribution of mosquito repellent creams and Dengue pamphlets has been ongoing since Monday, March 11 in the most affected regions.” He emphasizes that “the ministry is intensifying its efforts to combat Dengue through fumigation exercises, larvicide spraying, and residual insect spraying.”
