Political parties from both the parliamentary and extra-parliamentary opposition, invited by Rezistans Ek Alternativ to participate in a conference focused on constitutional reform and chaired by Me Satyajit Boolell along with Nalini Burn, were present at Unity House this Saturday, March 30.
Representatives of political parties had the opportunity to speak on constitutional reform. Mentioning a “disbalance” in the functioning of institutions such as the MBC, the PTr/MMM/PMSD alliance represented by Ritesh Ramphul, Veda Baloomoody, and Kushal Lobine proposed a committee with members from both the majority and the opposition.
In response, Veda Baloomoody of MMM emphasized the need to review the electoral system after two unsuccessful attempts. Ashok Subron from Rezistans Ek Alternativ highlighted the importance of “Mauritianizing” the electoral system and decentralizing the powers of the Prime Minister.
Géraldine Hennequin-Joulia from Ideal Democrat mentioned automatic voter registration on the electoral register. En Avant Moris, on the other hand, discussed the urgent need to consolidate Mauritius’s sovereignty attributes.
Me Kailash Trilochurn from the Reform Party raised the issue of “caste” barriers to becoming Prime Minister, suggesting that a Prime Minister should not serve more than two terms. Ivor Tan Yan from Linion Moris discussed regional democracy, among other topics.
The conference was also accompanied by an image showcasing the event.
