On March 16th, the NGO Fellowship First Aiders is organizing a blood donation drive at Square Raymond Chasle in Rose-Hill from 9am to 3pm. Lucienda Agathe, assistant secretary of the organization, explains: “We are regularly alongside the Blood Donors’ Association (BDA) during their activities. This time, we decided to have a blood drive under the direct sponsorship of the Fellowship First Aiders’ given the current situation.” Lucienda Agathe continues: “Due to the significant number of road accidents, with injured individuals in great need of blood transfusions, and with the dengue fever epidemic strongly affecting the country this year, we want to make our contribution.” Hence the collection happening this Saturday the 16th in Rose-Hill.

“This activity is part of the calendar of events marking our 25th year of existence this year. On February 25th, we organized a mass in the same context. Other activities will follow in the coming months to commemorate this important date,” she continues. Fellowship First Aiders was launched in April 1999 by Denis Grandport. Currently, Roland Grandport is leading the NGO, which specializes in first aid.

“We also conduct awareness campaigns for the general public, as well as in schools and within companies. We are also called upon for emergency interventions,” says Lucienda Agathe. The NGO has around a hundred members, all volunteers. “Our Rodrigues branch, on the other hand, has 25 members.”

Fellowship First Aiders is committed to providing every member of the Mauritian community, “regardless of age, cultural/religious/educational background, and learning style, the opportunity to develop skills in health promotion, health advocacy, evidence-based first aid, injury/disease prevention and control, fire and chemical safety, and applying a critical perspective to public health plans and policies.”
