A new legal framework will come into effect on May 1
Last Friday, the French Ambassador, Frédéric Bontems, handed over to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maneesh Gobin, the instruments of approval of the Extradition Convention between Mauritius and the French Republic, as well as the Mutual Legal Assistance Convention between the two countries. These two documents bear the signature of the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Séjourné.
The two conventions were initialled in Mauritius on November 10, 2022 by the former Mauritian Minister of Foreign Affairs and the former French Ambassador. Mauritius completed the ratification process on May 19, 2023. The instruments from the French authorities complete the ratification process for the French side. The two conventions will come into effect on May 1, according to their respective provisions.
The promulgation of these two conventions represents an important step in the bilateral relations between our two countries, particularly in our joint efforts to combat transnational crime. The new legal framework replaces an extradition agreement dating back to 1876.
