Kobita Jugnauth, the wife of the Prime Minister, who christened the new boat Peros Bhanos in Port Louis on Wednesday 28th February, failed to bring luck to the boat as tradition dictates for any new boat launched. Despite two attempts, the champagne bottle refused to break on the hull. A ceremony took place in front of a gathering of guests, followed by a visit to the boat by Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and his wife this afternoon.
The versatile 8200-ton ship, designed by the Chinese maritime transport company Huanghai Shipbuilding Co Ltd, was delivered to the Mauritius Shipping Corporation last December. It is 115.70 meters long and 20 meters wide, and will be used for logistics and coastal shipping between Mauritius and Rodrigues and between Mauritius and Agaléga.
