Leading cardiologists and gastrointestinal surgeons from Apollo Hospitals, located in Navi Mumbai, India, led a scientific exchange with clinicians in Mauritius. The event, organized by Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, in India, in association with the Cardiovascular Society of Mauritius and Clinique Saint-Jean, took place last week at The Docks in Port Louis.
The CME attracted over 60 physicians, including Dr. Sanjay Bucktowar, President of the Cardiovascular Society, and Dr. Satish Kumar Deenoo, Secretary of the same society. Topics included the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgical Spectrum at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, presented by Dr. Sanjeev Jadhav, while Dr. Ketul Shah gave an Introduction to Surgical Gastroenterology & Liver Transplant Surgery.
The event provided an opportunity to present to the attending physicians the current health challenges faced by Mauritians and to explore technological advancements in these areas. The Indian team aims for ongoing collaboration with Mauritian doctors to improve the healthcare sector in Mauritius and plans to organize similar events in the future.
Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai has successfully completed nine heart transplants and has a successful transplantation program. Over 200 liver transplants have been performed at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, including 65 in children. Dr. Sanjeev Jadhav, CVTS consultant, cardiac and pulmonary transplantation surgeon at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, explains, “We are in Mauritius on behalf of Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai to promote an exchange on cardiac surgery between India and Mauritius. Dr. Ketul Shah, HPB and liver transplantation consultant at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, adds, “We had detailed discussions with general surgeons and gastroenterologists practicing in Mauritius on the diseases affecting the residents here, such as liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, Crohn’s disease, and biliary strictures. At Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, we have performed liver transplants in adults as well as in pediatric patients, with a success rate of 90%, comparable to the best transplantation centers in the world. We have international patients coming to our center for liver transplants. We have discussed in detail with Mauritian clinicians the treatment options for their patients.”
