In the first week in office of the new CEO of Air Mauritius, Charles Cartier, has been one of listening, observation, and auditing of the current functioning and structures within the national airline company, the necessary evolution of some of them, and new appointments in the form of transfers or promotions. In an internal note addressed to employees, the company announced a series of organizational changes this week aimed at strengthening its operations and improving the customer experience. These changes include the creation of an Operations Advisory Committee, the appointment of a Senior Manager Ground Service worldwide, and adjustments within the management team.

The new Operations Advisory Committee, formed to advise the CEO on operational issues, is composed of five experienced members: Patrick Ter Hofsteed, Roodra Raghoobar, Sameer Baichoo, Ziyaad Parthasee, and Jean-Bernard Sadien.

As part of its continued commitment to improving the customer experience, Air Mauritius appointed Anba Manikham as the Senior Manager Ground Services Worldwide. This appointment aims to strengthen ground services at all stops of the airline. Furthermore, Jean-Hughes Young Lan Sun has temporarily taken over the reins of Cabin Operations and Inflight Services since March 13, assuming a key role in maintaining high customer service standards. Finally, the company announced the appointment of Roodesh Muttylall as the Corporate Finance Manager, which will take effect on April 22, 2024.

These changes are supposed to reflect Air Mauritius’ commitment to continuous improvement of its operations and customer service, while strengthening its management team with top professionals.

However, some decisions have been openly criticized, as certain individuals within the company seem to have retained their “nuisance value” in this first wave of changes since the arrival of the new team at the helm of Air Mauritius. Some of the criticisms and concerns raised include reactions of mistrust among employees and observers, contesting of appointments, reintegrations of certain individuals, and questions regarding human resources management.

An anonymous letter from employees dated March 10 expresses welcome to Charles Cartier and warns him that similar letters will be sent whenever principles of good governance are violated. The letter also urges a swift assessment of the human resources department, which they claim has been misused by certain individuals in the past.

A roadmap is proposed to the new management, including conducting external and internal audits of all appointments since voluntary administration, assessing the composition of panel members for interviews, investigating cases of harassment in key departments, reviewing changes, major decisions, and innovations made to the HR department, and initiating an inquiry into specific appointments and recruitments.

In conclusion, the responsibilities of certain individuals within Air Mauritius are criticized for contributing to the chaotic situation within the company. The CEO is advised not to surround himself with a team responsible for the state of disrepair of the company and who may try to take his place.
