About forty students, boys and girls alike, who achieved the best results in the 2023 exams of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) were rewarded by ACCA Mauritius at the High Achievers Celebration (HAC). Several of these students have achieved performances that place them in the Top 10 globally in certain modules, with two students even ranking in the Top 5.
Toolsi Devi Boojhawon secured the third place worldwide in Strategic Business Leader, and Beverly Halie Yim Fan Chan Soon Sen the fourth place in Financial Reporting. The Top 10 list also includes Hayyan Bhaukaurally, 5th in Performance Management, Sania Jackaria Essack and Muntasir Diljore, both 7th in Financial Management and Strategic Business Reporting respectively, Beeneswar Dhurandar (8th in Advanced Audit and Assurance), Aliya Sabryya Moos, 9th in Performance Management, and Isabelle Meelin Cheng Hum Yuen, 10th in Advanced Taxation. Other students ranked among the top fifteen or twenty globally in various ACCA modules.
The HAC is an annual event that brings together the award-winning candidates and their families. The Mauritian office of ACCA thus celebrates the best results obtained in Mauritius by students who participated in the exams of each of the three Levels of ACCA studies in March, July, September, and December. The best Affiliates, those who have completed all ACCA courses and exams with combined results, are also rewarded.
Several sponsors funded the certificates and shields that were presented: KPMG Mauritius, London College of Accountancy (LCA), BDO & Co, Deloitte, Alliot (Mauritius) Ltd, McMillan Woods, and PwC Mauritius.
Yuven Peechen ACCA, Lecturer at the London College of Accountancy, and former ACCA Prize Winner, shared his own experience and choices: believing in his abilities, finding motivation in life’s constraints to excel, and supporting his country. “I chose to dedicate myself to teaching, even though I had other options. I also chose to return to Mauritius and help the country,” he explained. “You are top achievers. Don’t stop there. This is not the end but a new starting point to go further.”
“By marking the performances of the best students each year, we highlight their efforts and potential, but this does not diminish the merit of other students in any way. The ACCA program is very demanding, and all those who choose it and complete their studies have achieved commendable progress, which opens up interesting career prospects, especially if they become ACCA Members,” said Madhavi Ramdin-Clark, Head of ACCA Mauritius & New Markets.
“We place great emphasis on ethics, which is an essential criterion for becoming a Chartered Certified Accountant Member of ACCA. One of the strengths of our training is to go beyond the purely technical aspect of accounting, providing knowledge that enables roles in consultancy and leadership,” she added. The ACCA professional qualification is equivalent to a British Masters and offers knowledge that can be directly and immediately applied in the workplace. The studies typically last three years, with a series of modules, each leading to an exam.
ACCA Mauritius encourages students to pursue their training at an institute recognized and accredited by ACCA to have better guidance on complying with ACCA standards in courses and infrastructure. ACCA has a three-level recognition program, with the highest being the Platinum status. In Mauritius, only one center, the London College of Accountancy (LCA), has this Platinum level of ACCA recognition, while several others have Silver status. There are only four ACCA Platinum training partners in the African region.
After completing all studies and successful completion of exams for Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 of ACCA, former students are not yet chartered accountants. To become one and therefore a Member of the professional association that is ACCA, they must also demonstrate their skills in a professional situation over a period of 36 months. They must pass the ACCA ethics exam and demonstrate compliance with ethical rules.
The ACCA qualification is recognized worldwide, and ACCA operates in 181 countries and territories. ACCA oversees approximately 247,000 members and 526,000 students. The global network of ACCA also includes over 100 official offices and centers worldwide – including the one in Mauritius.
ACCA regularly updates its training to meet the needs of economic, social, and technological evolution and to be consistent with professional demands and the increasing responsibilities of accountants in analysis and strategic advice. It is worth noting that over 80% of accountants in Mauritius are ACCA Members (chartered accountants).
