A Mauritian delegation – including Jagdish Koonjal, Mauritius’ permanent representative to the United Nations, Me Dhiren Dabee, legal counsel, and Reza Badal from the Prime Minister’s Office – is currently in New York, where they will present Mauritius’ case for the recognition of the continental shelf of Rodrigues before the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf early this week. Mauritius is indeed claiming that a continental extension of Rodrigues, covering an area of 169,000 km2, should be recognized as part of Mauritius’s exclusive economic zone.

The case was submitted in 2009 and has been examined several times. The examination will continue during the 60th session of the commission. The continental shelf is a maritime region that gently slopes to about 200 meters deep, primarily used for fishing.

Beyond this shelf, the depth of the sea can reach 3,000 meters, and this area is then considered international waters.
