Promotion-chasing Naivas and Mathare United secured wins in their National Super League (NSL) matches on Saturday, maintaining their top two positions as the first leg fixtures come to an end this weekend. Leaders Naivas emerged victorious against Nairobi United at Mpesa Foundation in Thika, increasing their tally to 42 points, while Mathare registered a similar result against visiting Mombasa Elite at Ruaraka Grounds to remain second on 40 points. Robert Karisa scored both goals for the retailers in the 61st and 72nd minutes, leading them to another crucial win.
Following the win, Naivas coach Collins Omondi praised his players while urging them to continue registering victories in the remaining matches, highlighting the importance of consistent performance.
Meanwhile, Mombasa Stars, backed by their home fans, secured a 2-1 win against visiting Gusii FC at Mbaraki Sports Club. However, Kajiado FC faced another disappointment as they lost 2-1 to Mara Sugar at home. Mombasa Stars coach Mohamed Hussein Madaga acknowledged the tough nature of the game, expressing surprise at their opponents’ strong performance. He credited his team for staying composed and securing the match-winner in the second half. On the other hand, Gusii FC coach Dennis Onkangi noted their initial struggles but expressed hope for improvement in future matches.
Looking ahead, the second-tier league features 10 matches on Sunday afternoon. Notable fixtures include SS Assad hosting Kibera Black Stars at Ukunda Showground, Mully Children’s Family taking on Dimba Patriots at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos, Rainbow playing Silibwet Leons at Vapor Grounds in Ngong, and Mulembe United facing Kisumu AllStars at Mumais Sports Complex.
