Former TV presenter Jacque Maribe and her former fiancé Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, are set to learn their fate this morning in the murder case of businesswoman Monicah Kimani, who was killed over five years ago. The 28-year-old woman was murdered in her Lamuria Garden apartment in the Kilimani area on the night of September 19, 2018, shortly after arriving in the country from South Sudan.
After hearing from more than 35 witnesses, trial judge Grace Nzioka put Maribe and Irungu on their defence. The duo was charged with the murder of Kimani on October 15, 2018. Despite the defence lawyers’ argument that there was no evidence linking them to the crime, the prosecution maintained that the two had a common intention and acted in concert to eliminate the deceased.
If found guilty of murder, Maribe and Irungu could face the death penalty, life imprisonment, or other lengthy prison terms. The prosecution also claimed that Maribe did not attempt to distance herself from Jowie’s actions and even assisted him in destroying the evidence.
Monicah Kimani had arrived in the country from South Sudan and was dropped off at her apartment by a taxi driver. She later called her brother to inform him of her arrival and was scheduled to travel to Dubai the following day to meet a Sudanese businessman. Her brother visited her apartment after she failed to respond to his calls, only to find her lifeless body lying in a bathtub with her hands and legs tied and mouth taped shut.
When they were charged, Maribe was released on bond, but Irungu’s request for release was denied due to concerns that he was a flight risk with no fixed abode or deep ties to the country. He was eventually released on bond after spending time in remand.
The judgement on their case has been postponed on two occasions, and today they will finally learn their fate in the murder of Monicah Kimani.
