Veteran lawyer James Namphambo was recently knighted for his unwavering dedication to the work of St. John’s Ambulance, an international organization that provides first aid and medical services. This prestigious honor was bestowed upon him by King Charles III of the United Kingdom, with the investiture ceremony being conducted by the Chancellor of St John’s Ambulance Scotland, Simon Mackintosh, at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral Church in Blantyre.
During the investiture ceremony, Mackintosh also recognized and honored nine other individuals as members and an officer of St John’s Ambulance Malawi. In a statement following the event, Mackintosh expressed his joy at seeing St John Malawi making significant contributions to serving humanity, highlighting the partnership between St John Scotland and St John Malawi in their shared mission. Community health initiatives in Blantyre and Lilongwe have been at the forefront of St John’s efforts, with support from St John Scotland.
The knighting of Namphambo, who serves as the president of St John Malawi, has elevated him to the prestigious title of ‘Sir,’ a special recognition approved by the King of England. In his post-investiture remarks, Namphambo expressed his gratitude for the honor, noting that it would further fuel his passion for charitable endeavors. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the efforts of individuals and organizations in helping those in need and less privileged communities, using funding from partners to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
Namphambo highlighted St John Malawi’s focus on primary healthcare, particularly in teaching locals about maintaining clean living environments without incurring additional costs. This emphasis on cleanliness aims to prevent the spread of communicable diseases such as diarrhea and cholera, with positive responses from the communities where St John Malawi operates.
In addition to Namphambo, other individuals recognized at the investiture ceremony included Chrissie Bema, Fred Demester, Precious Lucia Divala, Felister Kalasa, William Karanya, Dr. Grace Wit Katha, Reverend Canon Charles Masina, Judith Ntonga, and Vincent Blessings Tholo, the National Coordinator for St John’s Ambulance Malawi. The ceremony was attended by Bishop Alinafe Kalemba of the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi, who delivered a homily on the theme of ‘Caring for the Neighbor.’
