Tsogolo La Ana, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving education and empowering communities in Malawi, recently launched a project to expand Maria Primary School in Traditional Authority Kuntaja, Blantyre. The organization has invested K87 million to construct an extension to the school, adding four new classrooms to accommodate more students and provide a full primary education.

Maria Primary School, initially built by Tsogolo La Ana in 2022, currently enrolls 517 students from Standards 1 to 4. Recognizing the need for further education beyond Standard 4, the organization decided to expand the school to prevent students from dropping out due to the lack of options for continuing their education.

Lucy Maunde, the Executive Director of Tsogolo La Ana, highlighted the importance of extending the school to meet the community’s demand for primary education. She emphasized that students often face challenges in continuing their education after Standard 4, as the nearest schools are located eight kilometers away and require crossing rivers, making access difficult for many children.

The project to add new school blocks and classrooms will not only address the issue of school dropout but also provide essential resources such as desks, textbooks, and chairs for teachers and students. Maunde encouraged community members to participate in the construction process, as their involvement can improve the quality of education and promote better performance among students.

Group Village Head Kalombola echoed Maunde’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in education. He highlighted the role of school committees in identifying local education issues and implementing strategies to address them, ultimately benefiting the entire community.

Snowden Chimaimba, the Primary Education Advisor for Dziwe Zone, expressed gratitude for the project’s impact on the community. He emphasized the transformative power of education in fostering personal growth, empowering individuals to pursue meaningful careers, and contribute to society.

Chimaimba also appealed to well-wishers and stakeholders to support the school by providing a feeding program and a borehole, as the lack of potable water remains a critical issue for the school. He recognized the potential of the project to create a brighter future for learners and instill hope in the community.

Tsogolo La Ana, with funding from the ABC Association of Germany, is implementing the Tsogolo La Ana project in various regions of Malawi to improve access to education and ensure that every child receives a basic education. The organization’s efforts in Blantyre rural, Chiradzulu, Phalombe, Lilongwe, Mulanje, Thyolo, and Salima are aimed at nurturing young minds and creating a better future for all.
