Rotary International President Gordon McInally recently visited Malawi to pledge continued support to the country, with a focus on the health sector. This visit marked the first time in 20 years that a Rotary International president had visited Malawi.

During a meeting with President Lazarus Chakwera at the State House in Lilongwe, McInally expressed his appreciation for the work that rotarians in Malawi have been doing. He commended them for their efforts and contributions to the community.

One of the key points of discussion during the meeting was the swift response of Chakwera’s administration to the resurgence of polio in Malawi. McInally praised the government for its commitment to ensuring that citizens can once again enjoy a polio-free status.

Through the Rotary Foundation, rotary clubs in Malawi have access to grant funding for various projects. McInally mentioned that there are already several proposals being developed by rotary clubs in Malawi, and they hope to secure funding to support these initiatives.

Presidential spokesperson Anthony Kasunda highlighted the opportunities for partnership between the Malawi government and organizations like Rotary International. He mentioned the Malawi 2063 vision, which presents various areas where collaboration with Rotary International and local rotary clubs could be beneficial.

McInally’s connection to Rotary dates back to 1984 when he joined a rotary club at the age of 26. Over the years, he has served in various leadership roles within Rotary International. His vision for Rotary is to have a presence in every community, tailored to meet the needs and desires of those who want to make a positive impact in the world.

Before departing the country, McInally shared his gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality he received during his visit to Malawi. District 9210, which includes Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and northern Mozambique, was one of seven countries that he visited during his trip.

Overall, McInally’s visit reaffirmed the strong partnership between Rotary International and Malawi. The commitment to supporting health initiatives and other projects in the country demonstrates Rotary’s dedication to making a positive impact on communities around the world.
