The Private Schools Association of Malawi (PRISAM) has recently expressed its appreciation towards State President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for his decision to instruct the Ministry of Education and the National Council for Higher Education to revise university student loans. This move is aimed at helping to alleviate the financial burdens faced by students pursuing higher education in the country.

President Chakwera issued this directive during the launch of the University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS). In addition to revising university student loans, the President also urged the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Education to consider revising the allowances provided to students.

The decision to revise student loans and allowances has been welcomed by PRISAM, as it is seen as a step towards making education more accessible to students who may struggle to afford the costs associated with higher education. Dr. Ernest Kaonga, President of PRISAM, highlighted the challenges faced by many students whose parents are unable to support them financially. He mentioned that PRISAM frequently receives letters from students seeking assistance with school fees, and currently provides support to needy students at both secondary schools and universities.

Dr. Kaonga expressed the belief that the revision of student loans will have a positive impact on the education sector in Malawi. By making it easier for students to access financial assistance, more students will be able to pursue their academic aspirations without facing significant financial barriers.

The President of PRISAM emphasized the importance of providing support to students in need, particularly those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. He stated that the revision of student loans will enable many students to continue their education and ultimately contribute to the development of the country.

Overall, the decision to revise university student loans and allowances is a welcome development that has the potential to benefit a large number of students in Malawi. By addressing the financial challenges faced by students, the government is demonstrating its commitment to promoting access to quality education for all citizens. PRISAM remains optimistic about the positive impact that these reforms will have on the education system, and looks forward to seeing more students benefit from these revised loan and allowance policies.
