President Lazarus Chakwera assured the people of Nkhotakota who were left homeless due to devastating floods that the government will provide support to help them rebuild and recover. He visited the Matiki evacuation camp in the district and addressed the affected individuals, urging them to hold on to hope as the government stands by them during this challenging time.
Chakwera acknowledged the struggles faced by some business owners who had taken loans from the National Economic Empowerment Fund (Neef) and now face the risk of defaulting due to the impact of the floods. He emphasized that despite the economic challenges faced by Malawi, with loans amounting to K12.56 trillion as of December 2023, representing 84.8 percent of the GDP, there is still hope and optimism for the future.
The President expressed confidence that through dialogue and cooperation, positive outcomes can be achieved for both the affected business community and all flood survivors. He highlighted his commitment to ensuring that those returning home from the camps have the necessary support and resources to kickstart their recovery process.
Chakwera also addressed the implications of the floods on infrastructure projects, specifically mentioning the construction of the K35 billion M5 section between Kaphatenga in Salima and Benga in Nkhotakota. He noted that the disaster has caused unforeseen financial challenges, requiring additional funds for the completion of the road. The President called on parliamentarians and other stakeholders to collaborate in finding solutions, including possible renegotiations with the African Development Bank to secure the needed support.
In light of the widespread impact on various sectors such as education, health, water, and construction, Chakwera emphasized the importance of unity and resilience in the face of adversity. He urged the population to remain hopeful and determined to overcome the challenges posed by the natural disaster.
Overall, President Chakwera’s visit to Nkhotakota and his assurances of government support serve as a beacon of hope for the affected individuals and communities. By emphasizing collaboration and determination, he is rallying the nation to come together and work towards rebuilding and recovering from the devastating floods.
