The President of the country, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, has urged people affected by flooding to remain calm and not lose hope. Chakwera has instructed the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) to provide loans to the flood victims to help them rebuild their lives as the flooding has affected many people in the country.

Chakwera has also engaged with the Area 23 Development Fund Board (AFDEB) to address the situation in Dwangwa. Speaking during a meeting with local government officials, Richard Chimwendo Banda stated that the president is not just a leader for show during election time, but also in times of difficulty.

It is said that Chakwera is a man of the people and has a compassionate heart, as evidenced by his actions in response to the flooding caused by Freddy’s storm. He has also commended Illovo Sugar Company for its quick response in helping to open up Matiki Camp where some people displaced by flooding have found refuge.

In terms of the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), it is reported that 14,000 people have been affected and five to twelve have been left homeless.

The disaster has also caused extensive damage in Nkhotakota, where homes have been destroyed due to heavy rains that fell last weekend.

In one of the affected areas in Dwangwa, a woman named Alinafe Kachipande, said that the flood waters have swept away their crops leaving them in a desperate situation. She added that if the disaster had happened at night, many people would have been killed.

The aftermath of the flooding has left many people devastated and in need of assistance to rebuild their lives. Chakwera’s call for unity and support for those affected by the floods is a reminder of the resilience and strength of the Malawian people in the face of adversity.

Overall, the response to the flooding in Dwangwa and other affected areas has highlighted the importance of preparedness and community cooperation in times of crisis. As the country works to recover from the disaster, it is crucial for government and non-governmental organizations to work together to provide relief and support to those in need. The spirit of resilience and unity shown by the people of Malawi in the face of adversity is a testament to their strength and determination to overcome challenges and rebuild their lives.
