The National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust emphasizes the importance of implementing and enforcing laws that protect against racial discrimination. This issue is not only a concern in Malawi but is a global challenge that requires robust measures to address. Nice Trust’s acting Executive Director, Gray Kalindekafe, stressed the need for the Malawi government to not only enact laws but also ensure their proper implementation and enforcement to combat hate crimes, xenophobia, and bias.

Kalindekafe commended the government for already enacting laws that safeguard against racial discrimination but urged for more action to be taken. He called upon civil society organizations, faith leaders, and community members to come together to promote understanding and tolerance in society. By working collectively, they can create a Malawi where every individual can thrive regardless of their ethnicity or background.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed on 21 March, serves as a reminder of the tragic events that occurred in Sharpeville, South Africa, in 1960. On this day, 68 people were killed by police during peaceful demonstrations against apartheid ‘pass laws’. This year, the day was commemorated under the theme ‘A Decade of Recognition, Justice and Development: Implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent’.

The United Nations highlights that racial discrimination, along with the lasting effects of slavery and colonialism, continues to negatively impact lives and limit opportunities for billions of people worldwide. It impedes individuals from fully enjoying their human rights and freedoms. This underscores the urgent need for action to address racial discrimination at all levels.

In Malawi and beyond, it is crucial for communities to come together to tackle racial discrimination head-on. By promoting understanding, fostering tolerance, and actively enforcing laws, progress can be made towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all. It is through collective efforts and continuous advocacy that real change can be achieved in the fight against racial discrimination.
