The Grand Mufti for Malawi, Sheikh Muhammad Uthman Ntalika, recently called upon Muslims in the country to come together in unity and follow the teachings of Islam during the holy month of Ramadan. The announcement came after the sighting of the moon on Monday, March 11, 2024.

Sheikh Muhammad Uthman Ntalika highlighted the importance of embracing principles of co-existence, love, and unity while emphasizing the need for prayers for the well-being of the country. He urged Muslims to follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad and observe the fast during Ramadan with sincerity and devotion.

“Ramadan is a time for us to come together as a country and overcome the challenges we face. Let us strengthen our bonds of community and share the blessings and joy of Allah in this sacred month,” Sheikh Muhammad Uthman Ntalika stated. “Islam teaches us to be humble and kind to everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs.”

The spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Malawi, Sheikh Dinala Chabulika, echoed Ntalika’s sentiments, encouraging Muslims to make the most of the month of Ramadan by performing acts of kindness and following the commandments of Allah. He reminded the faithful that Ramadan is a time to draw closer to Allah through prayer, reflection, and devotion to the Quran.

“Ramadan is a time for spiritual growth and self-improvement. Let us not waste this opportunity by engaging in activities that do not benefit our souls or please Allah. Instead, let us focus on reciting the Quran and increasing our prayers to seek Allah’s mercy and guidance,” Sheikh Dinala Chabulika emphasized.

Chabulika also called on all Malawians to avoid greed and pray for a peaceful and fair outcome in the upcoming tripartite elections scheduled for September 16, 2025. He stressed the importance of seeking unity and harmony in the country to ensure a prosperous and peaceful future for all citizens.

Ramadan holds significant importance for Muslims worldwide as it is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and a time of spiritual reflection, fasting, and worship. Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed during this month as a guide for humanity and a source of spiritual enlightenment.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from eating or drinking during daylight hours as an act of self-discipline and devotion. However, individuals who are ill, elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, or experiencing mental health issues are exempt from fasting to ensure their well-being.

As Muslims in Malawi and around the world observe Ramadan, the message of unity, compassion, and devotion to Allah echoes through their actions and prayers, bringing communities closer together and fostering a sense of spiritual renewal and connection with the divine.
