The Mulhako wa Alhomwe, a cultural heritage organization, recently held its 13th Elective AGM on March 8, 2023, at its headquarters, Chonde Cultural Village in Mulanje district. The purpose of the AGM was to appoint a new board of Trustees, who will serve a four-year term. The organization also announced that former state President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will continue to serve as its Patron.
The newly appointed board of Trustees includes Trustee Muchanakhwaye Mpuluka as the Board Chairperson, along with Trustee John Kudzala, Trustee Justin Saidi, Trustee Rexy Tolani, Trustee Nyson Allan Malindi, Trustee Dr. Wilfred Lipita, Trustee Counsel Felix Tambulasi, Trustee Counsel James Naphambo, Trustee Witness Dyton Nangwale, Trustee Hon. Eunice Napolo, Trustee Lonnie Mphasa, Trustee Diston Thom, and Trustee Alfred Chiputula.
Established in 2007, Mulhako Wa Alhomwe aims to promote Lhomwe culture and instill a sense of pride in its people. The organization’s formation has played a crucial role in reviving some of the cultural practices that were on the decline. The Lomwe ethnic group is one of the four largest groups in Malawi, primarily located in the southeast section of the country, with the highest concentration in Phalombe, Mulanje, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, and Zomba districts.
Mulhako Wa Alhomwe’s efforts are focused on preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Lomwe people. Through various initiatives and activities, the organization aims to celebrate and showcase the unique traditions, customs, and values of the Lomwe community. By organizing events, exhibitions, and educational programs, Mulhako Wa Alhomwe strives to create awareness and appreciation for Lhomwe culture among both the local population and the broader Malawian society.
