The Federal Republic of Germany Ambassador to Malawi, Ute König, recently emphasized the importance of a mindset change among citizens to drive economic development in the country. During a visit to Africa Links 24 headquarters in Blantyre, König highlighted the need for Malawians to realize that they cannot rely on development partners indefinitely and must explore alternative ways to uplift themselves from poverty.

König praised the Social Cash Transfer Programme, which her government supports, as a means for beneficiaries, largely women, to purchase essential items and pay for their children’s education. By empowering individuals to become economically self-sufficient, the ambassador believes that poverty can be alleviated and a brighter future secured.

In addition to supporting the Social Cash Transfer Programme, Germany also contributes to various sectors such as health, nutrition, good governance, and education in Malawi. König emphasized the importance of increasing productivity and economic growth to drive national development. She highlighted the need for more schools and infrastructure to lay a strong foundation for progress.

König also commended Malawi’s focus on agro-processing as a means to maximize the potential of the agricultural sector. She cited the example of producing peanut butter locally instead of exporting raw materials, emphasizing the value addition and access to international markets. The ambassador encouraged Malawi to tap into Germany’s market of 84 million people and explore opportunities for exporting processed goods.

Before appearing on the ‘Times Special’ program on Times Television, König engaged in discussions with The Group Managing Director of Africa Links 24, Leonnard Chikadya. Chikadya reiterated the media giant’s commitment to impartiality and advocacy for the voiceless in Malawi. He highlighted the Group’s independent media policy and dedication to serving the interests of the Malawian population.

König’s extensive diplomatic career spans over 30 years, with roles ranging from private secretary to German president Roman Herzog to assignments in various German embassies across the globe. Her experience includes serving in the United Nations Human Rights Section, the Legal and Consular Department in Tel Aviv, and various roles within the German Foreign Office.

Overall, König’s visit and discussions with Africa Links 24 shed light on the importance of mindset change, economic empowerment, and sustainable development in Malawi. By fostering a culture of self-reliance, productivity, and value addition, the country can pave the way for long-term economic growth and prosperity for its citizens.
