President Lazarus Chakwera recently emphasized the crucial role of irrigation in achieving food security goals in Malawi. Speaking at the launch of the Kholongo multipurpose dam construction works in Dowa District, Chakwera highlighted the importance of irrigation, especially in light of unpredictable rainfall patterns affecting the country.

The event, which coincided with activities marking World Water Day, saw Chakwera underscore the need for alternative agricultural methods to ensure food sufficiency in Malawi. The President acknowledged the limitations of rain-fed agriculture in the face of changing climate conditions and stressed the significance of irrigation in mitigating food insecurity.

Chakwera also declared a State of Disaster to facilitate support from international development partners in addressing the hunger crisis affecting many Malawians. He emphasized the critical role of potable water in promoting peace and stability within communities, noting the adverse effects of water scarcity on societal harmony.

Elias Chimlambe, the Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation, commended the government’s financial commitment to the project. The ministry has allocated $214 million for the construction of additional dams in various districts across Malawi, with plans to enhance access to safe water for all citizens by 2030.

The Central Region Water Board (CRWB) Chairperson, Eddison Mombera, expressed optimism regarding the timely completion of the Kholongo dam project by 2026. Mombera praised the progress made thus far and expressed confidence in meeting the scheduled deadline for the construction.

Senior Chief Chakhaza lauded the government’s efforts in addressing water accessibility challenges in the region, commending the commitment shown towards improving water infrastructure in the area. The ongoing construction of the Kholongo dam, which began in March 2023, is expected to benefit over 191,000 individuals in Mponela, Madisi, and surrounding communities through water supply, irrigation, and fish farming activities upon completion.

The government’s investment of K79 billion in the construction of the 1.1-kilometer dam underscores its commitment to enhancing water security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in Malawi. The reservoir, with a capacity of 25 billion liters, is poised to significantly impact the livelihoods of thousands of residents by providing access to essential water resources for domestic and agricultural use.

Overall, the development of irrigation infrastructure, such as the Kholongo multipurpose dam, plays a pivotal role in addressing food security challenges and enhancing water accessibility in Malawi. Through collaborative efforts between the government, development partners, and local communities, these initiatives aim to create lasting benefits for the country’s population while fostering sustainable development and resilience in the face of environmental uncertainties.
