Good Friday was commemorated by Christians on Friday with various activities, including participating in the Way of the Cross. President Lazarus Chakwera joined a procession at Botanical Gardens in Lilongwe organized by different denominations, while Vice President Saulos Chilima was at St Patrick’s Parish in the city. Chakwera emphasized the importance of putting the word of God into practice to overcome challenges and unlock opportunities in life. He also condemned the behavior of those who oppress others and act as gods, denying people the right to question their actions.

Chakwera highlighted the significance of commemorating the passion of Jesus Christ as a way to bring people closer to God. He called for a revival of love and urged individuals to change their mindset, acquire new skills, and spread the love of God to everyone. Chilima, in an interview, emphasized the importance of the Way of the Cross for believers, underscoring the salvation brought by the passion of Jesus.

In Mzuzu City, an interdenominational procession was held by the Catholic, Lutheran, and Anglican churches jointly. Bishop Fanuel Magangani of the Anglican Church spoke about the challenges facing Malawians, including poverty, food insecurity, and unemployment. He stressed the importance of combining prayer with hard work and urged people to take action rather than just praying for things they can do themselves.

In Blantyre, Archbishop Thomas Msusa led members of the Catholic Church in a procession along the Kamuzu Stadium Road. Similar processions took place in Zomba, Mchinji, and other parts of the country. Apostle Matthews Chimwendo of Empowerment Seminar Ministry emphasized the need for politicians to emulate Jesus as a true servant leader, prioritizing the needs of the people they serve.

Rev. Baxter Maulidi of the Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian called for love, justice, and transparency from politicians and leaders during the festive season. Father Francis Damaseke of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi explained the significance of Good Friday as the pinnacle of the Holy Week, symbolizing Jesus’ victory over sin and death.

In conclusion, the events of Good Friday serve as a reminder for individuals, especially leaders, to prioritize service, love, and humility in their actions. The day is a time for reflection on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and an opportunity to renew one’s faith and commitment to living a life aligned with the values of compassion, love, and selflessness.
