President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi recently led a service in Mulanje District to honor the victims of Tropical Cyclone Freddy. This devastating cyclone made landfall on March 11 last year, causing significant destruction in the Southern Region districts of the country. During the service, which was held at the Mulanje Park Stadium and attended by a large crowd, President Chakwera urged Malawians to remember those who lost their lives in the cyclone-induced floods.

In his address, President Chakwera emphasized the importance of honoring the memory of the deceased individuals who were valuable members of their families and communities. He encouraged the living to not only remember the victims but also to live their lives in a way that benefits their country. The President stressed the unity of the Malawian people, reminding them that they are all part of one family and should support each other in times of need.

President Chakwera called on Malawians to continue supporting the survivors of Cyclone Freddy, noting that many people are still struggling and in need of assistance. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to restore public infrastructure, such as roads and bridges that were destroyed by the cyclone, including the reconstruction of the Thuchira bridge in Nkando, Mulanje.

Natural Resources and Climate Change Minister Michael Usi also spoke at the event, urging people to relocate from disaster-prone areas to ensure their safety. He emphasized the need to take proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with natural disasters and create a safer environment for all citizens.

During the service, members of the clergy offered prayers for the country and its people. The devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Freddy resulted in the loss of at least 679 lives, with 537 individuals still missing. Over 2.2 million households were affected by the cyclone, leading to the displacement of 659,278 people.

The event, attended by Vice President Saulos Chilima and First Lady Monica Chakwera, was held under the theme ‘A Resilient Nation Towards Recovery.’ The gathering served as a solemn reminder of the importance of unity, support, and resilience in the face of natural disasters and their aftermath.

As Malawians continue to rebuild and recover from the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, the words and actions of leaders like President Chakwera and Minister Usi serve as a guiding light, inspiring the nation to come together, support one another, and work towards a brighter future. Let us honor the memory of those who lost their lives by striving to build a stronger, more resilient Malawi for generations to come.
