President Lazarus Chakwera has emphasized the importance of collaboration and unity among players in the tobacco industry in Malawi to ensure the growth of the industry. Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Tobacco Processors Association, Chakwera urged all stakeholders to work together and swiftly address any challenges that may arise.

In his address, Chakwera urged the industry members to maintain sanity and avoid hindering the progress of others. He stressed the importance of continued engagement and collaboration among all players in the industry. Chakwera also called on tobacco buyers to ensure that farmers benefit from their hard work, and encouraged farmers to produce high-quality tobacco to attract better prices.

“We cannot continue producing low-quality leaf and expect to receive the best prices from buyers. It is essential for all stakeholders to do the right thing to ensure a thriving industry,” Chakwera said.

Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale affirmed the ministry’s commitment to addressing the issue of illegal cross-border trade of tobacco. Acting Chief Executive Officer for the Tobacco Commission, Evans Chilumpha, praised President Chakwera for fostering a positive working relationship with industry players. Chilumpha also commended Chakwera for signing the Tobacco Industry Act, which is expected to help address some of the industry’s major challenges.

“We appreciate the conducive environment that you have created in the tobacco industry,” Chilumpha said.

Limbani Kakhome, chairperson of the Tobacco Processors Association, called on the government to enhance security measures to combat illegal cross-border tobacco trading. Kakhome also urged the government to regulate the supply of tobacco to prevent a price crash in the market.

Overall, Chakwera’s message to the tobacco industry emphasizes the need for unity, collaboration, and a commitment to producing high-quality tobacco to ensure the industry’s prosperity. By working together and addressing challenges promptly, stakeholders in the tobacco industry can enhance the reputation of Malawi gold and secure better returns for farmers. The government’s support, along with industry players’ dedication to upholding standards and regulations, will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the tobacco industry in Malawi.
