Former President Dr. Joyce Banda’s Peoples Party (DPP) has announced that it will be holding its elective conference on September 7, 2024 in Lilongwe. Ackson Kalaile Banda, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, confirmed this development in a press statement. The conference will see all party positions, including that of the president, up for grabs as part of the preparations for the forthcoming 2025 tripartite elections.
In a statement, Kalaile Banda highlighted that this conference is a significant step in the party’s democratic process and sets the stage for a competitive and transparent selection of leadership. He emphasized that the party is committed to promoting inclusivity and ensuring that all members have an opportunity to participate in the decision-making process.
Earlier in January, Kalaile Banda had clarified to the media that PP’s founder, Joyce Banda, is eligible to contest for the position of president at the upcoming convention. This clarification came in response to speculations regarding the tenure of Dr. Banda as the party’s president.
The People’s Party was established in 2011 by Dr. Joyce Banda after she was expelled from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Her expulsion came following her refusal to endorse President Bingu wa Mutharika’s younger brother, Peter Mutharika, as the successor to the presidency for the 2014 general election. Dr. Banda’s decision to form the People’s Party was driven by her commitment to principles of democracy, inclusivity, and good governance.
As the first female President of Malawi, Dr. Joyce Banda has been a trailblazer for gender equality and women’s empowerment in the country. Her leadership style, characterized by compassion, integrity, and dedication to the welfare of the Malawian people, has earned her widespread respect and admiration both nationally and internationally.
The upcoming elective conference of the People’s Party holds immense significance not only for the party itself but also for the political landscape of Malawi. It presents an opportunity for party members to come together, engage in productive dialogue, and make informed decisions that will shape the future direction of the party and its role in the democratic process of the country.
With the date of the conference set and preparations underway, all eyes will be on the People’s Party as it gears up for a pivotal moment in its history. The outcome of the conference and the leadership that emerges from it will not only impact the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections but will also reflect the values and aspirations of its members and supporters. As the party continues to navigate the complexities of Malawi’s political environment, the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability will undoubtedly guide its path forward.
