The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) National Youth Director, Richard Chimwendo Banda, recently addressed the people of Chilanga Ward in the area of Traditional Authority Kilipula in Karonga district. During a campaign rally at Kakoma Primary School ground, Chimwendo urged the community to vote for an MCP ward councillor in the upcoming by-election to ensure continued sustainable development in the region.

Highlighting the achievements of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s administration, Chimwendo emphasized the government’s commitment to rebuilding an inclusive economy. He mentioned the elimination of power blackouts and the expansion of social cash transfers as signs of progress. President Chakwera’s promise to revive the economy, combat corruption, and support the private sector has attracted the attention of international partners such as the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and European Union, who have started funding various projects in Malawi. Chimwendo believes that these investments will contribute to economic growth in the country.

Encouraging traditional leaders, vendors, and community members to support MCP ward councillors in the upcoming by-election, Chimwendo emphasized the importance of voting for sustainable development initiatives like road construction, clinic improvements, and school infrastructure upgrades. As the Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture, he assured the public that the government would continue to provide relief maize to families facing food shortages due to droughts and floods.

For the forthcoming by-elections, MCP has selected the following candidates: King Mvula for Kaporo Ward, Alick Ng’oma for Chilanga Ward, and Gift Mwakyelu for Rukuru Ward. The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is scheduled to conduct the by-election on March 26, 2024, in Chilanga, Kaporo, and Baka wards. This comes after three ward councillors were convicted of various criminal offenses, leading to vacancies that need to be filled through the electoral process.

In conclusion, Richard Chimwendo Banda’s call to the people of Chilanga Ward underscores the MCP’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and improving the lives of Malawians. As the country continues to navigate economic challenges and natural disasters, it is crucial for communities to support leaders who prioritize the welfare and development of all citizens. By participating in the upcoming by-election and voting for MCP candidates, the residents of Chilanga Ward can contribute to the ongoing progress and growth of their region.
