Former presidential adviser and spokesperson for the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Rev. Maurice Munthali, recently made headlines when he branded President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s administration as worse than ever. In an exclusive interview with Zodiak Television, Munthali expressed his disappointment with the current state of affairs under Chakwera’s leadership.

Munthali, who has since joined the opposition Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), compared President Chakwera’s administration to that of his predecessor, Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He emphasized that corruption in Malawi has worsened under Chakwera’s rule, despite the government’s campaign promises to combat corruption.

“This is not the Malawi we were hoping for,” Munthali lamented, pointing out that the current administration has failed to deliver on its commitments to tackle corruption effectively. His stance on the matter led to his resignation as President Chakwera’s adviser and MCP spokesperson in March 2023.

Munthali’s political journey has been eventful, with a bid for the position of secretary general at the previous MCP convention, where he ultimately lost to Eisenhower Mkaka. Subsequently, he was appointed as the party’s publicity secretary. In the 2019 parliamentary race in Rumphi West under the MCP ticket, he also faced an electoral defeat against independent candidate Yona Mkandawire.

Prior to joining MCP in December 2017, Rev. Munthali had a brief tenure with AFORD after retiring as a minister. He previously served as the CCAP Synod of Livingstonia general secretary and later assumed the role of Chakwera’s adviser on peace, reconciliation, and national unity. His vocal criticism of the current government reflects a deep sense of disappointment and disillusionment with the direction in which the country is heading.

As an advocate for transparency and accountability in governance, Munthali’s critique of President Chakwera’s administration sheds light on the challenges facing Malawi in its fight against corruption. The discrepancy between campaign promises and actual outcomes underscores the need for greater integrity and efficiency in the political landscape.

Moving forward, Munthali’s decision to align with the opposition AFORD signals a shift in his political allegiance, as he seeks to champion a different vision for Malawi’s future. His experiences within the political arena have shaped his perspectives on leadership and governance, emphasizing the importance of upholding ethical standards and delivering on commitments made to the electorate.

In conclusion, Rev. Maurice Munthali’s candid assessment of the current state of affairs under President Chakwera’s administration highlights the complexities of governance and the challenges of combating corruption. His journey from a presidential adviser to a vocal critic reflects a commitment to fostering transparency and accountability in the political sphere. As Malawi navigates its political landscape, voices like Munthali’s play a crucial role in holding leaders accountable and driving positive change for the country’s future.
