Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda recently commended Illovo Sugar Company and other organizations for their exceptional contributions in assisting flood victims in Nkhotakota district. His comments came during a visit with President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to assess the impact of the floods in the area.

Chimwendo expressed his satisfaction with the private sector, particularly Illovo Sugar Company, for their significant role in providing essential financial, social, and technical support to those affected by the floods. He acknowledged their efforts in helping with search and rescue activities, providing earth-moving machinery, tents, blankets, and financial aid to aid in the recovery process.

The Minister highlighted the devastation caused by the floods, mentioning that entire villages had been washed away, leading to the destruction of homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure needed for recovery and support. He commended Illovo Sugar Company and others for their swift response and assistance in the face of such a tragedy.

Chimwendo also praised President Chakwera for his empathy and concern for the displaced flood victims, describing him as having a philanthropist heart for visiting and offering support to those in need.

In addition, Chimwendo called on other humanitarian organizations to join in providing assistance to the victims by offering mosquito nets, food, medical services, and other necessities to help alleviate the suffering caused by the floods.

During the visit, Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota North constituency, Henry Chimunthu Banda, urged the Department for Disaster Management Affairs to expedite efforts to help survivors relocate from the temporary camps set up in schools. He also appealed to President Chakwera to consider providing soft loans to the victims to aid in their recovery and rebuilding process.

The heavy rains in Nkhotakota district have led to the displacement of several families and widespread flooding, underscoring the urgent need for support and assistance for those affected by the disaster.

Overall, the collaborative efforts of government officials, organizations like Illovo Sugar Company, and humanitarian groups are crucial in providing relief and aid to the flood victims in Nkhotakota district. The situation highlights the importance of solidarity and support in times of crisis, as communities come together to rebuild and recover from the devastation caused by natural disasters.
