President Dr Lazarus Chakwera recently visited the 520-hectare Tropha Estate Limited’s Kaweche Farm in Mzimba District, emphasizing that it aligns with the government’s vision of promoting private mega farms in Malawi. The President expressed his satisfaction with the operations at the estate and urged other stakeholders in the agriculture sector to strive for similar standards.

The concept of private mega farms aims to enhance agricultural production, promote value addition, increase export earnings, and ultimately address food security and poverty in the country. President Chakwera highlighted the importance of implementing proper regulations to ensure that Malawian products meet global market standards, as demonstrated by the practices at the Tropha Estate Limited.

In his address at Ekwendeni Trading Centre, President Chakwera reassured the public that the government is committed to expanding the private mega farm initiative to benefit more individuals and communities. Traditional Authority Mtwalo lauded the President for his visit to the estate, noting its significant contribution to employment and agricultural development in the northern region and beyond.

With over 1,000 employees and partnerships with around 2,000 farmers, the Tropha Estate Limited serves as a model for successful collaboration between large-scale enterprises and smallholder farmers. Managing Director Duncan McDavid acknowledged the government’s support for the mega farm initiative, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and shared prosperity.

The Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, underscored the ministry’s dedication to providing expertise and assistance to individuals interested in participating in the mega farm scheme. The visit to the farm was also attended by First Lady Monica Chakwera, Former Vice President Khumbo Kachali, and other government officials, signifying the government’s commitment to agricultural development and economic growth.

Malawi is a major exporter of Macadamia Nuts, with approximately 17,000 metric tonnes exported annually, contributing around K40 billion to the country’s export earnings. The success of the Tropha Estate Limited in producing and exporting Macadamia Nuts, Chilies, Paprika, and Piripiri highlights the potential for private mega farms to drive economic prosperity and agricultural advancement in Malawi.

As the government continues to champion private mega farms as a catalyst for agricultural transformation, President Chakwera’s visit to the Tropha Estate Limited serves as a testament to the potential of large-scale agricultural enterprises to drive sustainable development and improve livelihoods in Malawi. Through collaboration, investment, and innovation, private mega farms have the capacity to revolutionize the agricultural sector and enhance Malawi’s position as a key player in the global market.
