President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of Malawi recently commended Malawian anthropologist and business magnate, Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira, for his role in the construction of the International Blantyre Cancer Centre (IBCC). The center, which was officially opened by the President, is expected to play a crucial role in saving the government money that was previously spent on sending patients abroad for cancer treatment.
During the inauguration of the IBCC, President Chakwera highlighted the significant impact of the center in providing accessible and affordable cancer treatment to Malawian patients. He emphasized that previously, sending a patient to India for cancer treatment costed around $15,000, a staggering amount that strained the government’s resources. By establishing a state-of-the-art cancer center like IBCC, the President expressed his commitment to ensuring that all Malawians suffering from cancer have access to treatment within the country by 2030.
President Chakwera also acknowledged that the fight against cancer cannot be solely undertaken by the government and stressed the importance of collaborative efforts involving various stakeholders. He commended Dr. Mpinganjira and the Board of Trustees of IBCC for their initiative and dedication to addressing the challenges faced by cancer patients in Malawi.
Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira, in his remarks, shared the personal motivation behind the establishment of the Cancer Centre. He revealed that the idea of setting up IBCC was born out of the tragic loss of his wife, Barbra Mpinganjira, to cancer in 2019. Dr. Mpinganjira emphasized that the center was created not only to honor those who have succumbed to cancer but also to support survivors and encourage those currently battling the disease to remain hopeful.
The President’s presence at the official opening of IBCC was appreciated by Dr. Mpinganjira, who acknowledged the significant financial investment of approximately K9 Billion that went into establishing the facility. The center stands as a testament to the commitment of Dr. Mpinganjira and other stakeholders to improve the quality of cancer care in Malawi and provide a beacon of hope for those affected by the disease.
During the event, Richard Chimwendo Banda delivered a speech on behalf of the Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, reaffirming the government’s support for initiatives aimed at combating cancer in the country.
The successful launch of the International Blantyre Cancer Centre marks a significant milestone in the healthcare landscape of Malawi and reflects a new chapter in the fight against cancer. With a shared vision of promoting accessible and affordable cancer treatment for all Malawians, the collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society is poised to make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the nation.
