The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) is gearing up to implement deliberate policies aimed at boosting food security in the country if they are voted into power in the upcoming tripartite polls next year. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Amatullah Annie Maluwa, revealed this during a public rally held at Nyankwali Primary School ground in Group Village Headman Kalumbi in Nsanje Central constituency on Sunday, March 17, 2024.
Maluwa emphasized that an AFORD government would prioritize irrigation policies to enable small farmers to engage in winter cropping, thus addressing hunger and improving their socioeconomic status. She acknowledged the tough economic times faced by Malawians, attributing it to poor economic policies of the current government, which have resulted in a high cost of living, inflation, and a high under-employment rate.
To ensure food security and affordability for families, AFORD plans to implement people-centered policies that empower small-scale farmers to produce staple crops like maize and rice. This includes promoting winter cropping through irrigation as a top priority in the agricultural sector, as well as ensuring affordable prices for fertilizers to benefit average Malawians.
Maluwa criticized the government for the scarcity of sugar in the country, describing it as a ‘death sentence’ for poor families who rely on it as a basic necessity. She condemned the high prices of sugar in stores, highlighting the disconnect between the government’s actions and the welfare of the people they serve.
Deputy Secretary General Linda Limbe also chimed in, decrying the deepening economic turmoil in Malawi and the lack of visionary leadership to uplift the lives of the marginalized population. AFORD, under President Enock Chihana’s leadership, aims to improve the business environment by facilitating profitable business operations and ensuring a steady forex supply to support thriving businesses.
At the rally, several individuals renounced their allegiance to other political parties and joined AFORD. New member Rose Phiri commended the party’s leadership for its comprehensive poverty alleviation policies, particularly in the Lower Shire region, such as promoting irrigation.
The event was also attended by notable figures like Director of Public Relations and Communication, Chris Thaulo, and Welfare Director Chimwemwe Lamba, showcasing growing support for AFORD’s vision and policies. The party’s commitment to addressing food security, economic challenges, and poverty in Malawi demonstrates its readiness to lead and bring about positive change if elected into power.
