A recent poll conducted by Afrobarometer has revealed that a significant majority of Malawians believe that the country is heading in the wrong direction under President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s leadership. The findings of the survey, released on March 8, 2024, highlight a sense of deep pessimism among the population, particularly regarding the state of the economy.
According to the survey, only one out of every ten individuals interviewed believes that Malawi is moving in the right direction. This means that nearly 90% of the population expressed concerns about the country’s current trajectory, citing poor economic management as a major contributing factor. These sentiments align with a previous report by the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, which also indicated that Malawians have become increasingly impoverished since the Tonse Alliance government took office.
The survey paints a grim picture of public opinion regarding President Chakwera’s handling of the economy, with over 85% of respondents expressing dissatisfaction with his performance. The majority of Malawians have lost faith in the president’s ability to turn the economy around, with eight out of every ten individuals believing that the economic situation has deteriorated beyond repair. This, in turn, has led to a rise in poverty levels and a bleak outlook for future economic recovery.
Afrobarometer polls are known for their scientific methodologies and ability to predict voting patterns in upcoming elections. While the latest survey did not reveal specific party preferences for the 2025 election, it did deliver a harsh judgment on the ruling MCP party, suggesting that they may face significant challenges in the polls next year.
With the election looming on the horizon, the survey results serve as a potential referendum on President Chakwera’s leadership and his party’s performance. The widespread disillusionment with the government’s economic policies and the perception of a country in decline are likely to shape voter sentiment in the upcoming election.
As Malawians grapple with economic challenges and rising poverty levels, the survey underscores the urgency for the government to address these pressing issues and regain the trust of the population. The upcoming election will serve as a critical juncture for the country, determining its path forward and the leadership that will guide it through these turbulent times.
