Jastas Madoya emerged as the winner of the fifth leg of the 2023/24 Safari Tour series at the Muthaiga Golf Club course, beating home pro Mutahi Kibugu by one shot. Madoya, who also serves as a pastor, displayed a calculated round, picking up three consecutive birdies from the second to the fourth hole. Although he dropped two shots at the sixth and seventh, he recovered with birdies at the eighth and ninth to finish the front nine on six under par.
The back nine saw Madoya play conservatively, securing pars from the 10th to the 18th hole. He narrowly missed an eagle opportunity on the 18th hole and settled for a birdie, finishing with a final round four under par 67 and an overall total of seven under par 277.
“I didn’t start the season well as I was not feeling too well, but I am better now and I look forward to playing good golf henceforth,” said Madoya, reflecting on his performance. He acknowledged that his approach shots had not been up to par and expressed his intent to work on improving this aspect of his game. Madoya attributed his decision to play for pars on the back nine to the challenging nature of that portion of the course.
Madoya’s victory earned him a prize of Sh150,000 and 50 points towards the “Road to Magical Kenya Open’’.
On the other hand, Mutahi Kibugu faced a difficult finish, starting the 18th hole at par with Madoya after scoring a birdie at the 17th. However, his approach shot at the 18th veered to the right, requiring him to navigate around a tree to reach the apron. Despite chipping on for four, he missed and finished with a par, concluding the day with a two under par 69 and a total of 278 for all rounds.
Golf Park’s Erick Ooko finished third with a score of four under par 280. Following the competition at Muthaiga Golf Club, the next event will take place at Karen Country Club.
The final leaderboard for the competition was as follows:
