The gendarmes were as in training against the Mauritians from Faucon Flacq CI. Four quarter-final matches of the 28th Zone 7 Clubs Championship, two for boys and two for girls, took place yesterday at the Mahamasina Sports Palace. The National Gendarmerie Volleyball (GNVB) secured their spot in the semi-finals, while the Farafangana Volleyball Club (VCBF) ended their journey. In a one-sided match, the gendarmes won 3 sets to 0 (25/15 25/22 25/16) against the Mauricians from Faucon Flacq Camp-Ithier yesterday at the sports palace.

The team led by Rampanana, the best player of the last national championship in Toamasina, imposed their law from the start of the match. Mamizara, Avosoa, Tolotra, and Judi were effective in attack and block. “So far, we have had a flawless journey. The players gave their all. I hope we will go even further. We have failed twice recently and this time we will do everything to win the trophy at home… My players were superior physically and mentally,” said GNVB coach Jean Honoré Razafinjatovo. “We have introduced new blood into the group, young players. And the National Gendarmerie is very supportive of its team,” said club president Fortunat Rajaonarison.

“The gendarmerie plays with a lot of automatism, and in front of their home crowd. It was difficult. We struggled especially in reception,” explained Deepak Aungne, coach of the club, eight-time Mauritian champion and four-time finalist in the zone. In the semi-finals, GNVB will face the winner in the quarterfinals, between TGV and Saint-Leu.

Lack of experience
In their first participation, the Farafangana team was no match for Saint-Denis Olympique. The Reunionese, three-time champions of the region, clearly dominated the match by confidently winning the first two sets (25/20 25/11). The players of CVBF rebelled in the third set and led 21/18, then were drawn 24 all before conceding 24/26. “Our strengths lie in cohesion. We were able to remain confident even in difficulty, although our libero had a difficult time,” confided Reunionese coach Kevin Agamemnon. “We lack experience, the players panicked in reception against the tall stature of the opposing team,” admitted coach Tahiry Andrianaivo.

Two Seychellois women’s teams secured their spot in the final 4 yesterday. The vice-champion of the zone, Anse Royale team, defeated the Reunionese from VBC Saint-Denis in the quarters by 3-0 (25/16 25/21 25/14) and VBC Saint-Denis Olympique, on the other hand, eliminated the Mauritian side Tranquebar Black Rangers by 3-0 (25/20 26/24 25/12).

Four other quarterfinals will take place today at the sports palace. In the women’s category, Tampon Gecko from La Réunion will play against Rodrigues Oranges CSA from Mauritius, followed by the match between City Ladies from Seychelles and GNVB. In the late afternoon, the men’s team TGV will face another Reunionese team, VBC Saint-Leu. And the last quarter will be the clash between Cosfa and the Mauritian team Rodrigues Oranges Montagne Goyaves.
