Fabrice, Willot, José, and Josh secured their ticket to the quarterfinals against the Mauritian team from Port-LouisPoint to end the elimination phase of the Zone 7 club championship. The quarterfinals will take place on Wednesday and Thursday at the Mahamasina Sports Palace.
Moving on to the final phase. Four Malagasy clubs have qualified for the quarterfinals of the 28th CAVB Zone 7 club championship. The reigning Madagascar champion club, the National Gendarmerie volleyball, was the first to validate their ticket for the final 8. The gendarmes finished first in Group A, a group of three, after a flawless performance of two victories. GNVB confirmed their dominance on Sunday against the Farafangana volleyball club, winning 3-1 after a 3-0 victory on Saturday against VBC Saint-Denis from Reunion Island. “I am satisfied with the performance of my players. We won and we never underestimate our opponents, whether Malagasy or foreign. The players started the match well and were effective in serving, blocking, and receiving,” rejoiced Jean Honoré Razafinjatovo, known as Noré Kely, coach of GNVB.
CVBF, on the other hand, finished second in the group after their victory in the second match against VBC Saint-Denis, 3-0 (25/16 25/22 25/12). Cosfa also finished second in Group B and secured their spot in the quarterfinals. The Military team defeated ASI in the opening match (3-2) but lost in the second match against Tampon Gecko from Reunion, the defending champion (2-3). Yesterday, Cosfa defeated Port-Louis Fire Star from Mauritius 3-1 (20/25 25/16 25/19 25/19).
“We had a good start against TGV. This club utilized its bench in the third set by fielding strong players like Lala Be and his son. We struggled to catch up until the tie break. The players were physically exhausted…But today (yesterday), we managed to handle the pressure to aim for qualification,” revealed Alaoy Lova Idriss, coach of Cosfa. Three out of five men’s teams continue their journey. The sole victory each by ASI and Mama was not enough to qualify for the quarterfinals.
On the women’s side, only GNVB remains in the competition after securing their ticket for the next phase. The national reigning champion club finished second in Group A after an opening loss against VBC St Denis (3-0) followed by a crucial victory against Premium Cobra from Seychelles (3-0) on Sunday. Four quarterfinal matches, two for men and two for women, will take place on Wednesday and the remaining four on Thursday. GNVB, the winner of Group A, will face Faucon Flacq Camp-Ithier, the second in Group D, and CVBF Farafangana (A2) will play against Saint-Denis Olympique from Reunion (D1). Cosfa will only play their match on Thursday. The women’s team of GNVB, on the other hand, will face Rodrigues Orange CSA from Mauritius on Thursday. The semifinals will be played on Friday and the finals on Saturday, at the Mahamasina Sports Palace.
