Last Thursday, the PDS went down to Tsaramasay to monitor the progress of the sanitation works.

Five days after taking up the challenge to rid the capital of garbage, the CUA is currently conducting a blitz operation to address black spots.

Blitz operation. Midway through, the challenge of the President of the special delegation of the capital, Richard Ramanambitana, remains difficult. There are only five days left before the deadline set by the President of the Republic to clear Antananarivo of the heaps of garbage invading most neighborhoods. The operation, carried out by the PDS team and the Municipal Sanitation Company, involves using all the equipment at the municipality’s disposal. Field visits have been frequent since last Tuesday.

The blitz operation also aims to prioritize addressing black spots. “We are slowly advancing towards our goal. With the blitz operation, we first address black spots, and then we will see about the others. But only after the deadline has passed will we truly know if we have succeeded in our mission,” explained the former senator yesterday in Analakely.

Optimism
“We bet that all black spots will be cleared of waste before the ten days set by the President of the Republic.” These are the words of Richard Ramanambitana with a hint of optimism. Listening to him, not all garbage will be cleared within the set deadline, but officials will prioritize these black spots first. The main question at the moment is what the next strategy of the municipality will be once the ten days have passed. It is clear that removing garbage from the capital once is feasible, but the real challenge lies in being able to do so continuously. This is also the only solution to reduce the pollution that reigns in the six districts of Antananarivo. The PDS also declares that at the end of the ten days, on March 15, it will be the population of the capital that will embark on a campaign to raise awareness about cleanliness and sanitation.

On his first day at the helm of the CUA, Richard Ramanambitana declared his intention to restore the reputation of the City of a Thousand. This will necessarily involve more effective waste management in the city, with the refurbishment of the most dilapidated streets. After the first five days, work seems to be speeding up with neighborhoods that are usually flooded being cleared of waste within two nights. However, one wonders if the SMA will be able to maintain this frenetic pace over time, especially in terms of finances and logistics.
