One hundred forty-seven baby turtles found yesterday in Tsarasaotra, Antananarivo
The trafficking of Radiated tortoises continues. One hundred forty-seven small turtles were about to be sold in Tsarasaotra, Antananarivo, yesterday. According to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the reptiles were being transported in two suitcases. Information reached the ministry and law enforcement about the transaction that was going to take place in Tsarasaotra. Upon arrival at the scene, they found only suitcases full of baby turtles. Neither the sellers nor the buyers were seen at the scene. Despite the intensification of measures to protect Radiated tortoises, which mainly live in the South of the country, the trafficking continues. Three weeks ago, a capacity-building workshop for judicial police officers, gendarmerie representatives, and law enforcement officers of the Androy region was organized in Ambovombe Androy. It aimed to strengthen the strategy and structure of interventions in the fight against turtle trafficking, symbols of the region and cornerstone of Antandroy culture. At the end of the year, another workshop was organized in Toliara to improve the fight against trafficking strategy. However, the trafficking continues and the turtles are evacuated from Atsimo- Andrefana and Androy to reach the capital, among others. They are often concealed in shipments of charcoal, vegetables, and bush taxis.
