Weather Madagascar closely monitors the evolution of this system.
The North should prepare for a deterioration of the weather this weekend. A depressionary circulation is setting up in the North-east of Madagascar and is expected to bring heavy rains, from 50 to 120 mm in 24 hours, on Sunday, March 3. The regions of Diana, Sava, Analanjirofo, and Atsinanana are thus on yellow alert. River floods, landslides, and floods are to be feared in these regions. Residents of these regions should also avoid going out to sea between Cap d’Ambre and Toamasina on Sunday, March 3. Swells could reach between 3 and 5 meters and cause shipwrecks.
The Maritime and River Port Agency (APMF) has thus suspended all requests for sea outings, whether for tourist circuits or for fishermen, from March 3 until further notice. The ports of Mananara-Nord, Maroantsetra, Soanierana Ivongo, Mahambo, Îlot Madame, Barachois, Loukintsy, Antanambe, and Antsiraka are affected by this prohibition.
This system will move fairly quickly towards the North of Madagascar. It could land in the Sava region this Sunday or Monday, according to yesterday’s meteorological forecasts. The General Directorate of Meteorology notes a lot of uncertainties about the evolution of this system. The weather conditions would not favor its development into a storm, and the system could remain at the tropical depression stage, with a wind of 55 km/h when it makes landfall.
If the meteorological forecast service assumed the naming of this system on Sunday, it was not confirmed yesterday. But even if this system does not reach cyclonic status, precautions should be taken. Heavy rains and high swells can cause accidents.
