Israel is the second country to come to Madagascar’s aid after the international appeal.

Evaluations of the needs in Madagascar after cyclone Gamane are complete. They amount to several billion ariary.

Colossal. The financial needs after the passage of cyclone Gamane in March are enormous. They are estimated at nearly 339 billion ariary, according to Elack Olivier Andriakaja, the Director General of the National Bureau for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), yesterday. This is the result of assessments carried out by the state and its partners such as the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), the World Food Program (WFP), and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the areas hit by the cyclone. “You will certainly say that this amount is enormous. But the needs are many,” clarified Elack Olivier Andriakaja.

This amount will be used, among other things, to rehabilitate the bridges destroyed by the cyclone. The Council of Ministers on April 3 mentioned the construction of a new bridge at PK 567, and another, a two-lane bridge at PK 537, on National Road 6. There are other bridges on National Road 5, and other sections of road on National Road 6 and National Road 5 that need to be rehabilitated.

Dribs and drabs

Madagascar also needs resources to carry out its recovery plan. “The state does not have accommodation sites for disaster victims. Schools have always been requisitioned to accommodate them. The government plans to build reception sites in vulnerable areas to address this situation,” continued Elack Olivier Andriakaja. Traditional housing units more resistant to cyclones and floods will also be built.

Since the national disaster declared by the Malagasy state at the beginning of this month, following the significant damage left by Gamane, aid has been coming in dribs and drabs. Two countries, China and Israel, have responded to the Malagasy state’s international appeal for assistance. Israel came to the BNGRC headquarters yesterday to deliver food to the victims.

Sources in the Sava region indicate that disaster victims in this region have not yet received assistance from the state since these disasters. The delivery of food to the North would be problematic, with road closures and the inaccessibility of maritime routes at this time. The dispatch of the 150 tonnes of food that the BNGRC planned to send last week will wait until this week, as the sea calms down.
