The future Filipo is developing in the Northeast of Sava.
The sixth cyclone of this season could be named by the end of this week.
Conditions are favorable for the formation of a cyclone in the Indian Ocean.
A threat to Madagascar?
Technicians from the Meteorology Department in Ampandrianomby are closely monitoring the suspicious area in the Indian Ocean. It could pose a threat to the Big Island.
“The system, located 1,500 km northeast of the Sava region, is moving southwest (editor’s note: towards Madagascar). It is still too early to say if it will hit Madagascar. There are still uncertainties. We will issue a special bulletin tomorrow (editor’s note: today) to indicate the system’s evolution,” explains Lahatra Mampionona, a forecaster, yesterday.
The Regional Specialized Meteorological Center of Météo France, reported by Zinfos974, a news website based in Reunion, indicates that “the suspicious area is expected to move towards the Malagasy coast by early next week. It could become a storm as early as Sunday before reaching the northeast of Madagascar. It is possible that it will arrive on the Big Island without having organized into a depression system.”
Vulnerable
It is highly likely that the sixth cyclone of this season will be named Filipo this Sunday.
“The chances of it becoming a cyclone are high. Conditions are favorable in the Indian Ocean, especially with the presence of an intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ),” adds Lahatra Mampionona.
Météo Madagascar advises residents of the Sava, Analanjirofo, and Atsinanana regions to prepare for a possible cyclone. According to Météo Madagascar, the risk of a cyclone approaching the districts of Antalaha, Sainte-Marie, Maroantsetra, Mananara-Avaratra, Soanierana Ivongo, Fénérive-Est, Vavatenina, Toamasina, Vatomandry, Antanambao Manampotsy, Mahanoro, Nosy-Varika to Farafangana is moderate between March 4 and 10.
The country is very vulnerable to natural disasters. Heavy rains and strong winds will certainly cause damage. The heavy rains brought by a cloud mass that hit the country during the first two weeks of February resulted in about ten deaths and thousands of displaced people.
