Two international events await the young Malagasy rackets in March. They pave the way for the African championship for the winners.

Malagasy tennis, thanks to the efforts of parents, reconnects with the international scene. After the successful two attempts of the U18 category in 2022 and 2023, the Malagasy Tennis Federation (FMT), aided by the parents of U14 players, is organizing two ITF circuits in the “U14 & Under” category starting from mid-March. The LG I (first stage) will be played from March 24 to 27 and the LG II (second stage) will take place from March 28 to 31, on the courts of Club CAR in Ivato.

The FMT confirms its place in the international tennis scene in the pursuit of developing local tennis. In order to offer more international matches to elevate the level of Malagasy rackets and reduce the expenses of parents, organizing international circuits for young rackets at home only presents advantages to local players.

While waiting for the definitive list of participating countries, registrations are already open and can be done online at the address [email protected], no later than March 10. The registration fee is 90,000 ariary or 20 dollars per tournament according to the exchange rate of the day, with a mandatory CAT license of 68,000 ariary or 15 dollars. The organization of this “African Circuit 2024” arose from a collaboration of parents of players, concerned about the future of their offspring who have potential in tennis, but lack international competitions.

Unwavering will

“Besides the international experience gained by Malagasy players, this grade 2 circuit brings 500 points to the champion and opens the way to participation in the U14 African Championship in September, the location of which remains to be determined,” said Dina Razafimahatratra, international technical consultant of the FMT.

Rebecca Ravelontsalama, tournament director, explained that the challenge was significant before the realization of this project. “Despite the initial challenges, I am proud to see this tournament take shape thanks to our determination and commitment. Tennis is much more than just a sport, it is a passion that deserves to be encouraged and promoted, especially in current times. Despite financial and logistical constraints, the enthusiasm of some committed parents and children remains strong, reflecting the importance of our event for the sports community. I remain confident in our ability to offer a memorable and enriching experience to all participants, thanks to our unwavering will,” she concluded.
