Surgeons from various specialties are on board the Mercy Ships hospital ship.

A month after the arrival of the Mercy Ships hospital ship, registrations will open. The operations will begin in the month of May.

Registrations for free surgeries, provided by the Mercy Ships hospital ship, will finally begin. The selection team of this international humanitarian association will identify the future beneficiaries from March 11 to 29. At the end of the selection process, a thousand patients will be selected. Two hundred and eighty-four patients in maxillofacial and otorhinolaryngological (ENT) surgery. Two hundred and twenty-five in general surgery. Two hundred and sixteen in pediatric general surgery. Forty-four in pediatric orthopedic surgery. Fifty-five in plastic and reconstructive surgery. And three hundred and three in ophthalmologic surgery.

There is no need to go directly to Toamasina to hope to benefit from these free surgical treatments. Mercy Ships will select beneficiaries in twelve localities including Antananarivo, Toamasina, Brickaville, Vavatenina, Amparafaravola, Miarinarivo, Maevatanàna, Ambilobe, Antsohihy, Morafenobe, Ihosy, and Manakara. For Antananarivo, the selection will take place at the Andohatapenaka University Hospital every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Taken care of

“You have to go through the selection process. Once the person is pre-selected, doctors will study their medical records, go down to the field to meet the patient, and will give their approval by ensuring that the patient really needs surgery and is in a suitable condition for a surgical intervention,” explains Espérant Mulumba, country director of Mercy Ships in Madagascar, yesterday.

Then, the patient will receive an invitation card from Mercy Ships, with the date of the trip to the port city where the hospital ship is moored, where the operation will take place. Before the operation itself, the patient and their accompanying person will be accommodated at the Be hospital where spaces have been renovated to accommodate men, women, and children. On the eve of the operation, the patient and their accompanying person will go to the edge of the ship. When they are able to leave the hospital ship after the operation, they will return to the Be hospital where they will follow the treatments until they recover. “Everything will be taken care of by the association, whether it is transport, accommodation, meals for the patient and their accompanying person, and of course, medical care,” reassures Espérant Mulumba. The operations are scheduled to begin at the end of May. The ship will remain in the country until 2025 to perform these operations.
