The closure project of the Andralanitra landfill site is progressing slowly. The Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene will soon release details about it.

After the current Antananarivo landfill site is closed, there will be not just one, but several landfill sites. According to Fidiniavo Ravokatra, Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, the Andralanitra landfill site will be relocated to several areas. He explained this during the launch of the solid waste management system improvement project in Antananarivo, in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). “Studies on the relocation of the site have already been conducted. The Ministry is currently compiling them. We will soon disclose the number of planned sites, their locations, and their management methods,” he said.

These new public landfills will be located far from populated areas. “We will establish them in open spaces that comply with environmental and technical standards,” he added.

Not all types of waste will be accepted at these new landfills. “They will be different from the Andralanitra landfill site. We will make efforts to separate household waste,” continued Fidiniavo Ravokatra.

Residents will need to continue to be patient. The permanent closure of Andralanitra is only planned for a few years from now. In the meantime, the Fukuoka method, a Japanese technique that accelerates the decomposition of landfill waste, will be implemented at Andralanitra. This method, developed by Professor Yasushi Matsufuji, involves introducing air into the landfill. The application of this Japanese technique, already adopted in other countries, will reduce methane production, control fires in the landfill, and contribute to overall environmental preservation. Additionally, it is cost-effective.
