A loaded truck crashed into two other heavy goods vehicles, one of which was broken down near Antsampanana (RN2). The assistant driver of the latter was fatally crushed.
A spectacular and unusually violent collision. It occurred on Monday around 9:30 p.m. on National Route number 2 (RN2), 2 kilometers from Antsampanana towards Toamasina. Unfortunately, a loss of human life was reported. The tragedy involves three semi-trailers.
According to information obtained from the gendarmes on duty at the advanced post of Antsampanana, the victim was an assistant driver, 24 years old. Their truck broke down as they were heading towards Toamasina. They then parked it at the side of the road, to their right.
The young man then managed the traffic himself. That evening, he stopped a truck heading towards Antananarivo, followed by a minibus, a Mercedes Sprinter. He was planning to let the vehicles coming from Antsampanana pass when the worst happened.
Another large truck heading towards the capital was speeding. It suddenly lost control as it approached the stopped cars.
Blocked
It failed to line up behind the Sprinter. It grazed it as it passed. It froze its truck against the broken down one. Due to the impact, the latter moved and hit the one next to it.
The assistant driver was crushed by the wheels of the frenzied heavy truck. “There were no other injuries. We observed huge material damage to the three vehicles,” the gendarmerie reported. “All of this was caused by recklessness and speeding. The responsible truck driver has been placed in custody,” it added.
The passage was completely blocked. Significant traffic jams formed on both sides for a few kilometers. All travelers and their drivers spent the night on board, facing the freezing cold and mosquitoes. The obstacles were only cleared around 8:30 in the morning. Since then, the cars have been able to pass one by one. The present gendarmes have streamlined the traffic.
“The victim’s family is on their way to retrieve him. His burial has already been prepared,” concluded the gendarmerie of Antsampanana.
