A mother protests alone in front of the town hall of Mahajanga against power cuts.
The people of Majunga are exasperated by the long power cuts that have been implemented again since Thursday. The economic impact on their activities is enormous. Enough is enough!
The rotating power cuts last for more than ten hours, up to twenty-four hours, in several neighborhoods of the city of Mahajanga. The shortage of fuel to supply the energy production plants is the reason for this. No neighborhood or household is spared. Even Mahajanga-be, La Corniche, and Androva, located in the red zone, are victims of this long darkness, from Thursday afternoon to Friday evening.
The consequences of this cut are disastrous and enormous for everyone, especially for those in liberal professions. Any profession related to the use of electricity, such as welding, cybercafes, photocopying, and printing, is affected by the long power cuts.
Economic activities are paralyzed, hair salons were closed at the end of the week, even though revenues are higher at the beginning of the month. According to Jirama officials, the main reason for this situation is the same as last time, namely fuel economy.
“A generator broke down, causing prolonged power cuts in the city of Mahajanga. Technicians are working to repair the power outages,” justifies Jirama on social media.
A protester
A mother, holding a sign (basy eky izay Jirama, aza vonoina izahay mpanjifa, ampy izay, ampodiano ny jiro, zonay mpanjifa izany), dared to protest alone to deplore the situation on Saturday afternoon, in front of the town hall.
“I am alone here in front of the town hall, but I am not afraid to protest. Maybe I am the only one suffering from this situation. My activities and income are severely affected by these power cuts. I am probably the only one afraid of the insecurity that reigns at night. Acts of banditry are rampant in Mahajanga these days. Maybe they will call me crazy, but I am fighting for my country, and I am taking responsibility for this misery due to this unacceptable situation. Others do not know their rights. We had a power outage on Thursday at 8 a.m. until Friday at 10:30 p.m.,” Julianna declares.
“We draw the attention of all authorities in Mahajanga. The troubles caused by power cuts are significant. We are not even talking about the water shortage yet. In short, we are fed up,” vehemently complains an economic operator.
