After the opposition’s split into two, the two blocs are organizing differently. The adopted strategies differ, putting the solidarity of the opposition at risk.
Fratricidal duel. This is what is happening with the opposition which recently divided into two blocs. While the war for leadership is the main reason for the split of the candidates’ collective, the strategies also differ for the “Collectif des Malgaches” and the “Firaisankina” platform.
On one side, there are Marc Ravalomanana, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, and others who base their strategy on the fact that their platform has two former presidents of the Republic and another who came second in the last presidential election. On the other side, Hajo Andrianainarivelo, Andry Raobelina, and company hold on to the popular enthusiasm during the “hetsika fotsy” of the pre-electoral period last year.
Another difference between the two blocs is in terms of structure. The “Collectif des Malgaches” relies on collegiality while “Firaisankina” is led by Marc Ravalomanana and Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko.
Conflicts are also starting to emerge among the former comrades in the fight, with Rolland Ratsiraka from the “Collectif des Malgaches” stating earlier in the week in Toamasina that some are determined to become the leader of the group at all costs, even though it was agreed from the beginning that the leadership of the platform would be collegial.
The head of the pro-Siteny group replied last Thursday, saying that “an animal without a head cannot walk.” The only thing that unites the two opposition blocs is the fact that they aim to participate in the upcoming electoral events and to seek the majority in the National Assembly. In this scenario, the situation is unlikely to improve, with probably a struggle for the designation of the opposition leader or in the proposal of names for the position of Prime Minister.
